A sea change is happening in the world of mission education. For decades Christian universities and seminaries have offered degrees and certificates in mission studies. And for a long time, the norm was to send missionaries to those schools either as part of their initial training, or for continuing education. But the mission force is changing. Less emphasis is put on academic and professional qualifications. Those who do seek a mission-related degree often make use of online programs.
As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of William Carey International University this year, we want to pay homage to WCIU’s heritage as an innovator in delivering education to people working on the front lines of God’s mission of wholeness and flourishing. We are asking two questions:
What is mission education’s future (if it still has one)?
What innovations will we need to bring that future into being?
