While I was in between tasks in my role at Frontier Ventures, I stumbled on this YouTube video. I am a fan of Gabriel Said Reynolds and appreciate his approach to the Qur’an. He brings scholars together and has conversations where I always learn something but don’t feel entirely like a newbie, because I don’t know Arabic. This conversation involves a practicing Salafi who is also a seasoned scholar and popular voice in the Muslim community. Dr. Yasir Qadhi has written this book, Understanding Salafism, which is both personal and academic in its reflections on the branches of Salafism and Qadhi’s own journey. In this interview, he elucidates some more information about Salafism and his own story. In it, we hear how there is a spirituality within Islam, which is different from Sufism, and engaged deeply with practices and scholarly traditions around purity. We also hear a little bit about how Salafism is divided and a bit like American evangelicalism. I have heard that in other places as well, Scripture People. All of this came together in a day where I finished an earlier version of Jose Abraham’s new book, Beyond Orientalism: Decolonizing Christian Approaches to Islam and Engagement with Muslims. One thing each of these books has in common is that they are expensive, and that’s why I hope to offer reflections and links on this content as well as other information that is more readily accessible, so that people can more deeply engage with and understand Islam and its many branches. May we learn from Muslims, Christians, and others who deeply engage and reflect upon these individuals and groups as well as have it enhance our own life in Christ and how we share that with others.
